TV In Focus: American Idol’s Thursday Shocker, Plus an Advice to Jessica
It could have been another Pia Toscano fiasco, but thanks to the ever-reserved trump card, “Judges’ Save”, the fate of Jessica Sanchez has been veered into a second chance shot at the American Idol title. But let’s face it, after such a fall from the front-runner status, it would take a breath-taking performance ‘a la Melanie Amaro’, to return to the top of the pack.
The judges will have to use the save either this week or the next, so the shocker in Thursday night’s results show was not in reference to the use of the Judges’ Save – but the contestant who needed the save. The said-to-be front runner plummeted to the bottom group, and further, got the lowest number of votes. Like her or not, Jessica Sanchez has been on top of almost every American Idol power lists. Even the “Idol vs. The Voice” scoreboard, updated and evaluated by LATimes, has her somewhere in the top three. Furthermore, she has never been in the Bottom Three, so the sudden fall was indeed a head scratcher. One can only speculate as to how she landed in the bottom of the pack so abruptly. Was it the obscure song choice? Was it the false assumption that she is not in trouble? What do you think happened? Sound-off in the comments section below.
Now, after this kind of fall, plus the backlash brought about by the not-very-well-thought-out behavior of the judges, can Jessica recover? I can only hope for the best. Just after Colton Dixon’s recovery from the pit of obscure song choices (remember the forgettable Lifehouse song? No?), she fell for the same trap. Although her rendition of Jazmine Sullivan’s “Stuttering” was the most technically perfect I have seen among the bunch next to Elise Testone’s “Vienna”, it is but unpopular, and the most critical thing about it is that she sang it on a theme week where she should have been singing a song where everyone can hum along to. Why can’t it be “Skyscraper”, Jessica, where it’s known and can easily show off your vocals? Or “California King Bed”, or a Ke$ha hot mess or another Beyonce or the Jennifer Hudson song that she sang on results night? She can sing anything – the yellow pages even and still sound stellar.
What she needs to do now, especially since she’s been showing off her vocal fireworks every single week, is to reach out to new fans by singing more popular tracks. While most viewers have already made up their minds as to whom they want to vote for, there are still thousands of those casual viewers who vote for the best performer of the week. Another thing is to make sure that if she survives more weeks, she is able to attract the votes of the fans of the ousted contestant. Most of DeAndre Brackensick’s fans are now rooting for her, due to their friendship, but what other fan bases can she gather? I’m not so sure. Let’s discuss this in the comments sections.
